Christmas Lights

23 December 2008 No Comment

I am preparing a short sermon for our Christmas Eve Service and something struck me. The theme for the night is The Star of Christmas. I started paying a lot of attention to light in God’s Word.

John 3:19-21

This is the verdict: Light has come into the world, but men loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil. Everyone who does evil hates the light, and will not come into the light for fear that his deeds will be exposed. But whoever lives by the truth comes into the light, so that it may be seen plainly that what he has done has been done through God.
There more than 250 0ther references, including Genesis 1:3. God creates light. Let there be light. This is before He creates the sun and moon and stars. The light he creates is generated by His glory. Imagine that, light with no shadow, because it comes from God Himself.

Anyway, As I thought of light at Christmas, God’s light from Jesus’ miraculous star split the darkness that first Christmas. At the other end of Jesus ministry, when He hung on the cross, carrying our sin, there was darkness in the middle of the day. Jesus entered by penetrating the darkness of man. He left carrying the darkness of man.

When God created light, it wasn’t because He needed it to see. He created light becasue we would need it to see, to see His hand at work. That is why He so often used light to symbolize Him and His Kingdom and He used darkness to symbolize our sinful state.

Look around at the Christmas lights this season and celebrate the light that comes fron the Star of Christmas.
