Occupy Your Street

31 October 2011 2 Comments

So, there are a bunch of people occupying places like Wall Street and pretty much every major city in the US. These people are protesting the greed of the wealthiest Americans. At least that is what they say for the cameras. The truth is, there is little unity in their statements and less unity in their cause. The truth is, they feel they are entitled to more than they have and it seems like a camping trip is the way to correct this. Their rally cry is, “We are the 99%.” This is to say, “The richest 1% of Americans are hoarding their wealth and the rest of us are suffering.”

Lets widen our view, Wall Street occupiers. You may not be in the top 1% worldwide, but I am willing to guess you are in the top 5%.

  • If your household income is $35000, you make more than 95% of homes in the world.
  • If you have plumbing and electricity in your home, you live better than 80% of the world.
  • US accounts for 6% of the world population and over 50% of the world’s wealth
  • More than 50% of the world’s inhabitants live on less than $2 per day.

I know we have truly poor families in the US. Hearing these statistics doesn’t make this any easier to bear. The vast majority of Americans and I dare say the vast majority of campers on Wall Street, have no idea what it means to live in true poverty.

May I suggest you stop playing this social activism game and go home. Occupy your own street. Reach into your wealthy, privileged, blessed American pockets and impact the needy within your sphere of influence. You have been complaining about the wealthy hoarding their share. You are guilty of the same. Making cardboard signs and sleeping in a tent changes nothing. Change your perspective, thank God for His provision, and cause change.

1 Timothy 6:17-19 As for the rich in this present age, charge them not to be haughty, nor to set their hopes on the uncertainty of riches, but on God, who richly provides us with everything to enjoy. 18 They are to do good, to be rich in good works, to be generous and ready to share, 19 thus storing up treasure for themselves as a good foundation for the future, so that they may take hold of that which is truly life.

Wonderful. I totally agree. Obviously they are no working, who is supporting them? Their parents? I would love to know.
